8 Spring Blossom Play Ideas!

Mar 10, 2025

The blossom is in full bloom here and so I wanted to share some of the best ways you can bring it into the children's play.

'The significance of the cherry blossom tree in Japanese culture goes back hundreds of years. In their country, the cherry blossom represents the fragility and the beauty of life. It's a reminder that life is almost overwhelmingly beautiful but that it is also tragically short. '

Homaro Cantu

Don't be too busy to rush past the blossom trees but instead let them be a remind that life is short but beautiful and to look up and notice them.

1. Look up

Look up at the blossom and see all of it's beauty. If possible go and lay under a blossom tree with the children and practice a moment of stillness. What do the children see, smell, hear and feel? Why not place a perspex mirror under the tree or some water play (always supervise) to reflect the blossom and provide an interesting perspective in the play.

It's also a wonderful sensory experience to take your shoe...

Winter Child Led Play With Loose Parts

Nov 25, 2024

What is a tinker tray?

Tinker trays are filled with open ended loose part materials that will spark curiosity, problem solving, critical thinking and imaginative play. The objects in the tray can be used in any way the child chooses and there is no set way that they should be used.  It is commonly used in the Reggio Emilia Approach to learning and can be adapted for a range of different ages and stages of development.

Materials for a tinker tray

Any tray with compartments can be used to display and store the loose parts to be used in play. I quite like using trays made out of natural materials like wood and seagrass as i always think we can display our materials in a beautiful way in these. Here are some ideas of what you could use or re-use:

  • A cutlery tray insert
  • A chocolate box or biscuit box insert
  • Bun trays
  • Tie box
  • Jewellery tray insert
  • Desk drawer dividers
  • Tool boxes
  • Crafting boxes
  • Ice cube trays
  • A tea bag caddy

Pumpkin Play!

Sep 23, 2024

Pumpkin fever is a fun way to celebrate the joys of Autumn! In this blog post I want to share with you some of my favourite pumpkin play ideas taken from The Wanderlust Child Nature Study.

When planning for seasonal changes in our practice we don't want to overwhelm our environment and teaching by letting a particular theme take over. Instead I like to start with a hook that will grab the children's attention and spark an interest that will have an opportunity to take it further. This then allows for children to delve into the hook you've introduced in their own way and have the freedom to take it in their own direction. Some children will decide that they don't want to engage in the 'hook' any further during their child initiated time and that's also fine.

Hook Ideas:

  • Mark make what you’re thankful for on a large pumpkin
  • Visit a pumpkin patch/ allotment and choose your own pumpkin for the setting.
  • Provide a range of different sized squash and pumpkins, wooden numbers, numic

Advent

Nov 30, 2021

There are many different ways that we can prepare for advent with young children and our loved ones. I like to make this time full of hope in my setting and learning environment and think about ways we can add a dose of cosy too!

I have created a  FREE printable hygge in the early years advent calendar that can be used as a family to focus on collecting moments and making memories together over the festive season. Let's not forget the only Christmas present we wanted last year was to see family and friends. It's easy for the commercial side of Christmas to run away with us and make us forget what's important.

I like to stick my daily hygge prompts into a little envelope or a postage tag and hang these up. We then take it in turns to open one each day over breakfast.

You might also decide to light an advent candle. In Denmark families enjoy foraging for natural treasures in the forests like bark, berries, twigs, moss and pine. They then enjoy coming home into the warmth and h...

Gifting for the Wanderlust Child

Oct 28, 2021

When considering gifts for your Wanderlust Children why not think about items that will help them be excited about future adventures! Here is my list of ideas to get you started..

Small World Woodland Animals

Let children create their own re-tellings of their adventures with a set of some beautiful handmade wooden figures.

A Cosy Nature Based Book

Get cosy and snuggle up together with a cosy book. On Christmas Eve the Icelandic people practice something called 'jolabokaflod,'  which translates to 'Christmas book flood. ' Jolabokaflod involves giving books as presents on Christmas Eve, so that friends and family can spend the cozy night in curled up with a good story.

Wanderlust Patches

Whether you're following the Wanderlust Child Nature Study or you're making up your own nature challenges, these make a wonderful gift for young children to collect and be proud of their achievements.

 Bird and Bug Boxes

Encourage young children to invite wildlife into their outdoor spa...

How I plan for the start of the Autumn term

Sep 09, 2021

When it comes to planning for the first few weeks of the Autumn term with your new children I would focus on prioritising the following:

  • Making sure new children feel safe and settled
  • Building positive relationships with all children
  • Establishing rules and expectations
  • Getting children used to the daily routine

If you take a re-watch of my video from my Hygge Summer School you can see that I share the ways I would plan and organise the daily routine at the start of the year in Reception or nursery.

When the time feels right for you and your children you can then start to spark new curiosities and interests by introducing these to the children. As much as I believe lots of what we teach from should come from the children I also understand that there needs to be a balance of us as educators offering the opportunity to broaden the children's knowledge through the exposure to different and new experiences. These might be linked to seasonal changes, festivals or celebrations.  ...

Rainy Day Play Ideas

May 05, 2021

'And so the rain invites a street of colourful umbrellas to blossom.' Angela Abraham

I love the quote above and it reminds me that it's so important to see the beauty in the rain. After a very dry April the rain we received here in Yorkshire yesterday was very welcome.

I wanted to share a few rainy day ideas for you this Spring to support your nature based practice.

1. Head outside and smell the rain

We're often in such a race to get out of the rain, perhaps running to get inside, that we forget to actually experience the rain. Get dressed up in suitable waterproof clothing and head outside to smell and feel the rain. How does it sound? What temperature is the rain as it hits your skin (does it feel warm or cold?) What shapes do we notice the raindrops make as they hit the ground? Can you take 5 big deep breaths in and feel the rain calm your senses? As you tune in and smell the rain this is called Petrichor and it is the earthy scent produced when rain falls on dry soil.

4 Ways to Take Your Literacy Outside!

Apr 16, 2021

Literacy outside should look very different to what opportunities you offer inside. Think about the richness the outdoors brings and try and create learning moments in nature. We don't want to just bring out alphabet posters outside and stick them on a fence. Instead think of how literacy can be applied in the outdoors in a meaningful way.

To get you started i've shared a few of the ideas from my Literacy Wanderlust Planning Guides (available here)

1. Nature Study: Create a  Themed Nature Backpack

What do I need?

  • Spotter sheets (see my butterfly digital download here)
  • Clipboards
  • Rucksack
  • Bug viewers
  • Magnifying glasses
  • Notebooks and pencils
  • Camera
  • Books on butterflies, mini-beasts and trees

What do I do?

Create a themed nature back pack based on your children's curiosities. It could be on butterflies and include a spotter sheet, life cycle information, identification cards, anatomy of a butterfly, butterfly life cycle story stones, fiction and non fiction books on bu...

Resourcing for Provocations

Mar 13, 2021

Guest Post by childminder Jodie Williams @jodiewilliamschildminding

Teaching children about nature and giving them the opportunity to be outdoors exploring is a very important part of our day. I found the child thrived when doing outdoor activities especially in the local woodland areas.

They love to collect objects, bringing them back to the setting and incorporating them into their play and exploration.

Over the past year it has become more important to be able to be outdoors, exploring in our own little group setting. Which has helped all of us to cope with the current pandemic & changes.

This is why I have now started to change how I teach and the resources I use. I haven’t got much space to store lots of one use resources. So this change has definitely allowed me to minimise resources to ones that provide the most learning opportunities.

We now have a lovely collection of natural resources. A variety of baskets containing small logs, log slices, stones, & sticks. Also ...

Your Winter Nature Shelf

Nov 27, 2020

A little space on a shelf will be just perfect, a collection in a shoe box or even a display in the middle of your dining table. It's a wonderful way to bring the connection with the great outdoors into your home and to celebrate the season.

You could include some seasonal spotter sheets, natural number cards and ways you've recorded your sightings.

It can be something very simple found on a walk like a pinecone, a rock, flowers from the garden or a feather.

We like to add our drawings and paintings of the natural find too or a question on some card we've been curious about.

If you have the space you can maybe add some beautiful decorations you find of nature or a postcard that lights you up.

Here is a list of where you can find all the resources used in our winter bird nature table

Winter Nature Cards

Bird Spotter Sheet

Child Voice Nature Cards

Wanderlust Child Nature Journal

Wooden small world birds

Rock card holders

Counting pebbles

Wooden bird tree slice
