Hygge Case Study: "I was honestly ready to give in and change my career."
By Rebecca Reynolds

"When I first started my Hygge Journey I had recently started back to work after maternity leave with my second child, I was in an emotional place knowing my last ever baby had just been born and I wasn't in a position to be able to afford to take more than 14 weeks off with her , this had made me totally and utterly love all love, motivation and enjoyment for my job. I felt that my playroom was cold, uninviting, sparse and housed too much bright coloured plastic, whether that be in storage boxes or toys, it wasn't a space I wanted to be in, let alone somewhere I wanted a newborn baby to spend ten hours a day in, I was honestly ready to give in and change my career. I didn't take time for myself and was always trying to keep others happy, I felt like I was juggling a hundred different balls just trying to keep my career going. I felt my life was very chaotic and I spent what felt like all my day shouting at my own family.

Then one day I came across the Hygge in the early years accreditation, it took a few months of umming and arring, researching more about the Hygge lifestyle and what it could bring to myself, my family and my childcare setting, before I took the leap, and I am so glad that I did.

I started by just changing the odd plastic toy to a wooden version but before long there was not a sight of plastic in my playroom. Storage tubes had been changed to open shelves or ReSpiin seagrass bowls. Single use/specific purpose toys had made way for baskets of cotton reels, pegs, boxes of hand crafted wooden planks. The more I saw the children’s curiosity sparked the more time I wanted to invest into getting my playroom just how I wanted it. I created different mood/vision boards on how I wanted to set up my space for different seasons or events, ie, Christmas/ Easter, it's taken two redecorations but I finally feel like I am getting somewhere with it all. It's starting to feel very cosy, warm and welcoming. With adding lots of cushions, rugs, faux flowers, motivational quotes, candles, pictures and blankets, a cosy area with canopy for the children to snuggle up when they need some quiet time.

I now take time for myself at the end of each day to reflect on what I am grateful for that day. I write it down in my gratitude diary and I make sure at least once a week I make some time just for me, whether it be a bubble bath with candles or just a cup of tea and chocolate in the quite.

My journey on this course has made me realise you can't pour from an empty cup and if I am not at my best, feeling happy, relaxed and content then I can't make the best of developing the lives of the children I care for."
